PROJECTS
These projects trace the relationship between observation and memory. Beginning with photographs of environments, objects, food and other details of everyday life. I use painting as a way of examining what these familiar things can hold beyond their physical appearance. The source image documents what was present: the finished work reflects what remained.

When collard greens shimmer in the kitchen and sweet gum trees stretch overhead. A love letter to Black Southern life and to the hands that seasoned the pot, the trees that watched us grow and the beauty we made from what was around us.

Under Southern Sky reflects on the land, labor and complicated inheritance of the American South.
The work draws from the history of sharecropping which was a system that bound generations of Black families to land they worked but did not own. Against a field of Southern green, dark and earth toned forms move across the canvas like fragments of figures, soil and memory.
